The CEFR level ladder
French proficiency is measured on the international CEFR scale, from A1 to C2. Not sure where you sit? Take our short placement chat and we'll point you to the right class.
A1 Beginner
You can understand and use familiar everyday words and very basic phrases, introduce yourself, and interact simply when the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
A2 Elementary
You can handle routine conversations on familiar topics — shopping, family, work — and describe your background and immediate surroundings.
B1 Intermediate
You can communicate confidently in most real-life situations while travelling, and produce simple connected text on familiar subjects.
B2 Upper Intermediate
You can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes conversation with native speakers comfortable, and argue a point of view clearly.
C1 Advanced
